Multi Ethnic Theater to Present August Wilson’s “Jitney,” August 7-31

Broadway World reports that San Francisco’s Multi Ethnic Theater, in association with Custom Made Theatre, will present Multi-ethnic Theatre persents JitneyAugust Wilson‘s Jitney, August 7-31, 2014 at Gough Street Playhouse, 1620 Gough Street in San Francisco.

The production is directed by Lewis Campbell, founder and artistic director of Multi Ethnic Theater. The play concerns a group of working class men in Pittsburgh’s Hill District who offer gypsy cab rides to and from African American communities where city cabs refuse to go.

The second annual August Wilson Society panel was held in Washington, DC on May 23, 2014.

Session participants included Sandra Shannon, Jacqueline Zeff, Anthony Pennino, Elizabeth Pittman, and Michael Downing.

The papers were excellent, the session was well attended, and a lively discussion ensued.

Next year’s conference (2015) is slated for Boston, Mass. The CFP for the August Wilson Society will be available in the fall of 2014.

As a sidenote, I was happy Alan Nadel could attend.  Alan and I have exchanged numerous emails related to August Wilson, so it was nice to put a face to a name.

From the Associated Press:  “A judge has approved plans to sell the bankrupt August Wilson Center for African American Culture to a New York developer that wants to put a hotel on top of the downtown Pittsburgh building.”
