August Wilson Line DrawingBy Mike Downing

Charles Burns has done numerous portraits of celebrities, including August Wilson, that were published on the cover of The Believer magazine between 2003 and 2013.

He used ink on paper in a 6 by 6 inch format.

Phylicia Rashad Talks August Wilson Ahead of PBS Special

2 Feb

By Mike Downing

August-Wilson_01I am thrilled to say that the PBS documentary on August Wilson (“American Masters — August Wilson: The Ground on Which I Stand”) premieres nationwide Friday, Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. on PBS.

The documentary “traces the life and legacy of the Tony- and Pulitzer-winner — from his roots as a Pittsburgh activist and poet to his indelible mark on Broadway” (from Eurweb).

I am very gratified to know that I played a small part in the planning this effort, as I was invited to a planning session in February 2013 at the August Wilson Center, which I documented here.  Not sure whether I’ll end up in the credits or not, as my role was very small, but I have my fingers crossed.

Today’s link is to an article relating to Phylicia Rashad’s comments on Mr. Wilson ahead of the documentary’s release.  Click on the image to connect to the article and sound recording.
